Facebook to turn over documents in Privacy Probe- California AG
San Francisco- The California Attorney General, Mr. Xavier Beccera, has demanded in a state court that Facebook must turn over documents that were withheld by them from an ongoing probe. This ongoing probe is related to the Privacy Practices adopted by this Social Media Giant. Facebook is accused of mishandling personal information of tens of millions of users, in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Mr. Beccera was addressing a press conference, in which he accused Facebook of stonewalling subpoenas from his office. He also accused Facebook of thwarting his investigation that was intended to find out whether Facebook violated the user’s privacy and the Law of California. Mr. Beccera refused to give any detail or any specifics of his investigation, in this press conference.
Mr. Beccera said that Facebook has not so far paid any attention to his legal requests for providing information. He further added that whenever he engaged in any investigation and issued lawful subpoenas, he expected that the subjects of those subpoenas would respond accordingly.
Facebook gave a different statement, when they were reached for commenting on this matter. They said that they have already supplied thousands of pages of written responses and hundreds of thousands of documents to the investigating authorities.
Will Castleberry, the Vice President of State and Local Policy in Facebook, sent a E mail, stating that they have extensively cooperated with the investigation being conducted by State of California.
The filing in the Superior Court in San Francisco on Wednesday is the latest incidence from a chain of privacy mishaps. These mishaps have made the public further outraged and they are now aggressively reacting against the big tech.
Facebook was fined a record setting amount of $ 5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission. This fine was announced after a year-long investigation initiated by the scandal at Cambridge Analytica, in the year 2018.
